Thames Water, the UK’s largest water company, has received approval for funding from Ofwat, the water industry regulator, to update London’s water infrastructure and build resilience of the existing water systems.

As part of Price Review 19 (PR19), Ofwat made a provision for Thames Water to investigate resilience risks and identify the required solutions to improve London’s water supply. The funding is conditional to Thames Water passing a few investment reviews with Ofwat. Thames Water has agreed to undergo the review and will carry out upgrading at Coopermills and Hampton water treatment works that will improve the resilience of the water network.

The upgrading work includes the installation of new equipment and technology, as well as treating the wastewater to a higher degree. An important addition to the treatment is the removal of phosphates from wastewater to a higher degree.
