Southern Water Deploys AI Tool to Detect Early Equipment Faults

Southern Water has begun rolling out an AI-based monitoring system — in partnership with Samotics — to detect early signs of mechanical issues, electrical faults, and blockages in its submerged wastewater pumps.
Key points:
The goal is to reduce unplanned outages, protect customers and the environment, and lower operational costs by allowing maintenance before failures occur.
The system, SAM4 by Samotics, records high-resolution data (≈20,000 data points per second) to establish “normal” operating behaviour and then flags anomalies.
After a successful pilot in 2024, the full deployment aims to equip up to 3,500 devices across Southern Water’s network in 2025.
