Severn Trent Trials “SewerBall®” Technology to Detect Sewer Issues Faster

Severn Trent has launched trials of SewerBall®, a sensor-packed, untethered device that traverses sewer networks detecting changes (e.g. pH, temperature) to spot potential faults up to three times faster than traditional methods.
About the technology:
- The device (about tennis-ball size) can drift through pipes or be stationed in one spot.
- Some variants include 360° camera capability for internal visual inspections.
- It helps detect issues like groundwater infiltration or illegal waste disposal.
In a two-week trial across sites in Shropshire and Staffordshire, the team surveyed 14 km of pipes. 80% of issues flagged by SewerBall® were confirmed as needing attention.
Severn Trent plans to adopt the technology in its operations and build a dedicated team to run it.
