Scottish Water First To Use New Methods for Viruses in Water

Scottish Water, which supplies 1.51 billion litres fresh drinking water to its customers, has been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for a new method to detect for potential viral contamination in water at its laboratories in Edinburgh and Inverness.

The addition of this new method ensures that Scotland’s drinking water is being effectively monitored and is of very high quality. Scottish Water, following instructions from the Scottish Government, has adopted new EU Drinking Water Directive regulations and was notified by the Drinking Water Quality Regulator (DWQR) to comply with the new regulations, including a regulation to test for the presence of Somatic Coliphages for the first time. This testing is presently not a requirement anywhere else in the UK and Scottish Water are the only water company in the country to carry it out.
