14th Conference of the UK Network on Potable Water Treatment and Supply

September 28, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 12:45 pm

The 14th Conference of the UK Network on Potable Water Treatment and Supply took place on 28 September 2021.

This conference was the fourteenth in an annual series focusing on drinking water production from source to tap and was an excellent opportunity for attendees to get the latest information on water treatment and supply, and interact on the topic with scientists and researchers from water companies and leading global academic institutions.

Our full conference welcomed more than 70 delagates and 8 speakers from the industry and academia to discuss on a range of topics including coagulation from NOM removal, slow sand filtration, taste and odour management, virus mitigation using advanced drinking water treatment process, biofilms and PFAS removal (see details below)

For the first time, the conference also hosted a vitural poster exhibition, sponsored by the International Water Association UK committee. The poster were presented as three-minute recorded presentations that are accessible on our website at: http://water-and-wastewater-networks.co.uk/conference-poster-videos/. Our winner this year was Lucie Pidoux, PhD researcher at Cranfield University for her poster on “Prediction of organic matter and inorganic ions removal by ion exchange at reduced regeneration frequency”.

Our 2021 speakers line-up:

  • Stephan J. KÖHLER, Innovation Coordinator, Uppsala Vatten, SWEDEN and Ida SEKOVIC, Norrvatten, SWEDEN.
  • Testing the limits and evaluating the potential of small bench scale online coagulation units – comparison of pilot and bench scale experiments using online coagulation to remove NOM.
  • Tolulope ELEMO, EngD Researcher, STREAM Industrial Doctorate Centre, Cranfield University, UK.
  • An alternative way to clean slow sand filters.
  • Prof Joby BOXALL, Professor of Water Infrastructure Engineering, The University of Sheffield, UK.
  • What are biofilms doing in our drinking water distribution pipes?
  • Dr Lutz AHRENS, Associate Professor in Organic Environmental Chemistry, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), SWEDEN and Philip McCleaf, Water Resources Engineer, Uppsala Vatten, SWEDEN.
  • Removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from drinking water – an overview.
  • Dr Will DUCKWORTH, Water Quality Scientist and Dr. Amy JEFFREY, Technical Support Scientist, Yorkshire Water, UK.
  • Managing taste and odour risk at Tophill Low Water Treatment Works, East Yorkshire
  • Dr Brooke K. MAYER, Associate professor in Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
  • Virus mitigation using advanced drinking water treatment processes: The influence of virus structure.

The recording of the conference as well as presentation slides are available to members of the UK Water Network only via our members areas.
