£180m Investment to Prevent Sewage Spills

The Environment Secretary (under the Sunk Government) announced a £180m investment over a 12 month period to prevent over 8000 sewage spills into the UK’s rivers and waterways.
Water and sewage companies have also been urged to reduce sewage spills through the use of AI systems to manage storm loads, installation of new in-sewer monitors to check flows and spot blockages early, recruitment and training of staff, and accelerated wetland construction programmes.
The investment and following improvements has to be delivered by April 2025, support the targets under the government’s Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan. This investment is that largest infrastructure investment among water companies, estimated at £60 billion over the next 25 years.
